The Evolution of Dissolution

Written by Laura A. Wasser, Esq.

How the online divorce platform It’s Over Easy is changing the perception of divorce.

I’m Laura Wasser, attorney, author, and founder of the online divorce platform, It’s Over Easy. I’m also the proud parent of two awesome kids.  Their dads and I share custody, and so far, we all feel that we are doing pretty well.

I have been practicing Family Law, otherwise known as Divorce Law, for over 20 years. Both my professional and personal experience of going through my own divorce have taught me a thing or two about navigating child custody, support, and division of assets.

I believe that agreements made between couples are much better than letting a judge, who doesn’t know you or your children, make decisions about big ticket life issues. At my firm, most of our clients are wealthy and/or famous. But while the number of zeros on their bank account balances may be different than the average person, the fear, anger, and sadness that come with divorce are all the same.

Over the years, countless friends and clients have said to me, “If I only had known then what I know now…” The wisdom they had gained throughout their divorce experience could have saved them heartache, aggravation, and money. Lucky for you, I’ve already been through it! So don’t worry--you’re not alone.

Techniques for Amicable Resolution of Divorce

Not enough progress has been made toward developing techniques for effective resolution between couples in the event of divorce. Ensuring that the divorce process goes smoothly should not rely on personal experience. In that case, we would only know how to approach divorce the second time around. And believe me, one divorce per lifetime is quite enough for one person to handle. So, how can we change the perception and traditional approach to divorce to lay a foundation for more amicable, straightforward, and effective techniques for resolution at the end of a marriage?

I truly believe that in this day and age, divorcing couples (or unmarried parents in custody disputes) are generally capable of working out many of their issues on their own via mediation, collaborative practice, counseling, or some combination of legal guidance through an admittedly archaic and complicated system. They are doing all this while having to communicate directly as opposed to through an expensive attorney.  An evolution is taking place, and I call it the evolution of dissolution.

The Affordable Solution to Divorce

My experience working in Family Law has made me painfully aware of how clueless we, as a society, are about the divorce process. My goal is to change this.  In 2013, I wrote a book called, It Doesn’t Have To Be That Way - How to Divorce Without Destroying Your Family or Bankrupting Yourself. The book gives some helpful hints about modern dissolution, taking into account the hurdles faced by couples who want to separate their households and finances in a civil and cost effective way. I wrote it in an effort to extend my knowledge about divorce to the broader public, especially anyone considering divorce without the means to work with a divorce attorney.

When I first started working as a divorce lawyer, I went to work at my dad’s firm. He really knew what he was doing. Not only had he and my mom had the most respectful divorce ever, but they resolved their financial issues, and worked effectively as co-parents to my brother and I. Our firm has always promoted settlement-oriented resolution, no matter the circumstances. In some ways, divorce is a great equalizer. But unless you have already been through it, you are probably unfamiliar with the process and the standard laws, which can be frustrating, and at times, very scary.

Get Divorced Online with It’s Over Easy

After writing a book about divorce, the next step in my mission to change the way people approach divorce was to develop a streamlined, online solution to simplify the entire process of dissolving a marriage. It’s Over Easy is a website that allows like-minded couples to separate and divorce from the comfort of their living rooms. Our team has developed an intuitive and simple process for uncontested divorces that’s available to everyone. The platform is easy to use and allows you to move at your own pace. We launched two years ago, and feedback from customers about the user experience has been overwhelmingly positive.

In addition to our divorce platform, we also offer child custody and co-parenting tools to assist with communication and creation of shared custody schedules. Our balance sheet programs will explain property allocation, and we have created technology to assist with determining the appropriate amounts of child and spousal support. If you hit a roadblock on any of the issues, It’s Over Easy offers the opportunity to live chat with a Divorce Coach or can direct you to financial advisors and mental health professionals who can help.

The Index: Divorce Community and Helpful Divorce Resources

We also offer a bounty of educational articles and interviews on the It’s Over Easy Insights Blog for anyone going through or thinking about going through the divorce process. From education comes reason. Our blog has articles written by professionals and actual people who have gone through the experience themselves. We have tools and suggestions of ways to “think outside of the box” and avoid costly litigation.

We also take the idea of community very seriously, which is why we created The Index. The Index provides resources and support unique to what our users might need when going through a divorce. It also includes everything from fiscal planners, real estate agents, and mental health practitioners, to a great blow-dry, dating app, massage, or meditation class. We believe that the process of recovery, renewal, and reinvention requires support in many forms. For example, we support organizations like The Harriett Buhai Center because we believe in the value of everyone having access to justice.

We have amassed an online destination rich with information, services, and curated professionals for all of your next-chapter lifestyle needs. It’s Over Easy is a resource that’s not just fit for divorce, but for all stages of your life and relationships. Simply put, It’s Over Easy gives people who are going through what is not an easy life experience the ability to be the master of their own destiny, and move through to the next stage of their lives smoothly, affordably, and with a support system helping them along the way.
